Venue

RCMM (Research Centre for Molecular Medicine) is a research institute of the Medical and Health Science Center of the University of Debrecen, dedicated to clinically oriented and basic cutting edge biomedical research.

RCMM operates as a network of collaborating research laboratories aiming at advancing molecular life sciences and our understanding of human diseases. These activities have been supported by interactions with the Medical and Health Science Center of the University of Debrecen, one of the largest Academic Medical Centers in the country. RCMM was also created in order to facilitate joint research projects and mutual use of core facilities.

The main research topics investigated by RCMM scientists include, among others, membrane dynamics, cell death, nuclear hormone receptors, calcium signaling, hemostasis, protein phosphorylation and oxidative stress.

The research groups of RCMM work in close collaboration with European and International partner institutions and are determined to further strengthen networking activities with leading foreign and Hungarian labs and thus embedding RCMM into the European Research Area. State of the art core facilities are available in Clinical Genomics, Proteomics, Bioimaging, High Throughput Screening, Lipidomics and an SPF Animal Facility.
In 2002, the research, training and networking activities of RCMM have been recognized by the European Commission awarding the "Centre of Excellence" title to the Centre.

The Venue of the course will be the Life Science Building (LSB) and the Theory Building (TB) of the University of Debrecen. The LSB is  a 17,000 m2, state-of -the art research facility built in 2005. The LSB has three lecture halls (for 300, 154 and 117 students) from which the smaller one will host the lectures, discussions and student presentations during the course. Our labs conveniently accommodate 5 groups of students (with 5 students in each group). The LSB and TB host the flow cytometry and microscopy core facilities, which will be used during the course. Two practices will take place at the Department of Anatomy and the Department of Physiology, respectively.

Debrecen Flower Carnival

At Debrecen's Flower Carnival, a unique event in Europe compositions made of approx. 150-180 thousand spears of flowers and natural materials illustrating scenes or works of Hungarian everyday life, history or arts process across the city. Flower cars are accompanied by Hungarian and foreign dance ensembles, music bands and art groups who entertain the audience of the Flower Carnival.

Among the marching groups usually there are special and exotic guests such as Japanese or Israeli dancers and the Italian Flag Player Group. The procession of the Flower Carnival is traditionally led by Debrecen Majorette Ensemble and Youth Brass Band awarded at multiple festivals. The Flower Carnival starts in the morning of August 20 from Petőfi Square and crossing the city arrives to the Great Forest Stadium, where a jury consisting of well-known characters of public life and artists evaluate participants of the Flower Carnival, both compositions and  performances.

Besides preserving traditional elements of the Flower Carnival program, such as "Gerundium" Competition and Carnival Race, there are new events every year and yet the Carnival isn't concentrated on a single day. The Flower Carnival is preceded by the several cultural events of the Carnival Week: concerts, theatre plays and dance performances that offer entertainment and leisure also to guest of Campus Hotel. In the evening of August 20 traditionally fireworks and street party closes the Flower Carnival of Debrecen. (More photos here)
